1. All courses start Monday at 0900 and end at 1630 on the last day All our prices include food, accommodation on-board, bedding, fuel and Oilskins/Waterproofs, if required.
2. Where a Yachtmaster exam is required at the end of the course, an additional charge for use of the yacht for the exam post course will be $300NZ for the day/night of the exam. Exam fees or the Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate ($435NZ) and Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate ($485NZ) courses are additional to the prices listed above and are payable to the Coastguard Boating Education Service (CBES). Examinations


Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence

The holder of the Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence has the knowledge needed to skipper a yacht on coastal cruises but does not necessarily have the experience to take longer passages.

Exam Duration

The exam will take about 6-10 hours. Candidates will be set tasks to demonstrate their abilities as a coastal skipper and may also be asked questions on any part of the syllabus for all practical and shore-based courses up to Coastal Skipper.

Pre-exam requirement.

To take the practical exam the candidate must be aged 17 or over and requires:

  • Radio Operators Qualification

  • First Aid Certificate

  • Sea-time-800 miles logged within 10 years prior to exam, 30 days living onboard, 2 days as skipper, and 12 night hours.

Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence

The holder of the Yacht Master Offshore Certificate of Competence is competent to skipper a cruising yacht on any passage during which the yacht is no more than 150 miles from harbour.

Exam Duration

The exam will take about 8-12 hours. Candidates will be set tasks to demonstrate their abilities as a skipper of an offshore cruising yacht and may also be asked questions on any part of the syllabus for all courses except Yachtmaster Ocean.

Pre exam requirement

To take the practical exam the candidate must be aged 18 or over and requires:

  • Radio Operators Qualification

  • First Aid Certificate

  • Sea-time- 50 days, 2,500 miles including at least 5 passages over 60 miles, acting as skipper on at least 2 of these and including 2 which have involved overnight passages, 5 days experience as skipper. Half the qualifying sea-time must have been in tidal waters.
